Does Having a Blog Niche Matter?

Everyone who talks about wanting to start a blog, starts the conversation with niches and “What niche should I do?” is often the first one. I’ve accepted that I don’t go with the flow and don’t disappoint by going off the trend by suddenly supporting them with a few reasons to support my beliefs. Whether you choose to stick to a “theme” or not, it totally up to you, it just doesn’t work for me. 

First and most importantly, although my blog is primarily about books, but I have a thousand other loves that I want to share with you. It’s not that I don’t want to or think it’s a good idea to stick to one thing, some people, like me, find it impossible! 

There’s no doubt that over the 10 years I’ve been blogging, that I’ve honed it in a bit but I’m still all over the place at the time. Who doesn’t want a recipe, book review, and a craft pattern post in the same day?

Knowing why you want to start your blog is important. If you’re doing it for others, meaning you’re monetizing it, selling services or good, etc. then sticking to a specific niche is probably the way to go. However, if you’re looking to write for yourself, share multiple ideas or make yourself the topic, you should feel free to do whatever you like! 

After all, what is it they say?

“If you build it, they will come”

The other part of having a niche that bothers me is having to know my audience. I’ve tried this when playing with Facebooks Ads not too long ago, I had everyone selected once I was through building out my audience and realizes it the only thing I knew for sure about my potential followers was that they would mostly all be women. That was the only thing I could narrow down at all. 

If you know anything about this, you’ll know you have to carve out a chunk of what you’re focusing on. For example, if you’re writing about Gaming, you don’t want to just have a general gaming blog, you probably want to gear it more towards one game and own it. Truthfully, I feel who is that boring? No offense of course, but I could never hone it that much! 

I feel the one big question you want to ask yourself is “Will I want to be writing about this a year from now"?” If you’re not sure, don’t it. Of course, don’t be afraid to start and change once you get going and have learned a few things. 

“It’s better to start and go slow, then to never have begun at all!” 

Here’s a list of the most profitable niche ideas, maybe one of them will be something you can see yourself posting about longterm?

Of course, Travel is at the top of the list! We all thought it would be a long while until we were able to go very far with COVID-19 in the air, but it looks like we’ll be getting back to “normal” sooner rather than later. Whether that means Travel will be hot or not, I can’t tell you but eventually, we’ll be going farther than the grocery store! 

• Health & Wellness Blogs are always a good bet. There’s always a crowd who wants to get in shape, get fit, and feel better. Plus the bonus of easily building a community or group doesn’t come with every niche! 

• E-Learning Courses - Learning online is moving up the list as more and more professionals share their knowledge with us. From tutoring, teaching to learning options, there’s a well of things to keep your busy posting for a while regardless of what your niche is. 

• Tech & Gaming - Both are always evolving so if this is your thing, you could be busy for a while! Don’t sell yourself short by sticking to one game or program either, unless it’s YOUR thing. 

• Parenting Blogs - Of course, this one is a given. First, you’ll always have new parents creating a great audience, plus this too is ever-changing. With new gadgets, updated knowledge, and a wealth of professional experience out there, you’ll never run out of things to write about. 

You’ll see that this typical blogging list doesn’t contain books, possibly one of the reasons why I ventured off the traditional path. Whether it’s part of it or not, it’s not in my personality to stick with just one thing. I want to learn as much as I can about a lot of different things and if something sparks my interest enough to share it, I will. Off-brand or not. 

The other side of my blog is focused on Work from Home or Freelancing work and information wanting and needing to share the information on one platform is enough for me. Heck, having to manage two Instagram accounts is too much! If I didn’t combine something, I’d be even more scatter-brained than I normally am! 

I bow down to those that can stick with one theme or niche for the long haul, but if that’s not for you, do your thing!
